In November, the Yale Center for Business and the Environment launched its new website: cbey.yale.edu. The redesign not only provides an aesthetic update, but gives our audiences—internal and external—more ways to engage with the work that we do and the people involved.
Since our founding in 2006, we have grown to serve twice as many students and dramatically expanded the range and depth of our program offerings. Our network has branched out to include more business, nonprofit and government leaders, both in the United States and, importantly, abroad. In April of 2014, we established a partnership with the World Business Council on Sustainable Development to promote sustainability-related collaboration between Yale scholars and global business leaders. We’ve also expanded student internship opportunities, most recently in partnership with WWF and Alcoa, established the Clean Energy Finance Forum as a leading industry news source, and embarked on a large-scale solar research project with a $1.8 million grant from the Department of Energy.
Throughout this eight-year evolution, our website remained unchanged. The fact is, we outgrew our old home.
Our new website dynamically highlights the Center’s leadership in graduate education and our role as a community hub for innovative and accomplished professionals. The essence of our work is building connections, and this, too, is the essence of our new site.
Select highlights of the redesign are:
- Site-wide emphasis on the diversity of events, speaker and seminar series, conferences and workshops that we host and co-sponsor throughout the year. We have made our online programming, new and old, freely available for those interested in the insights of leading thinkers at the intersection of business and the environment.
- The organization and promotion of our internal resources, from research whitepapers to archived webinars. We have cataloged a rich library of information over eight years and can now promote our practice-based scholarship to a global audience. For instance, The New York Times recently featured wetlands mitigation research carried out by two joint-degree alumni.
- The promotion of student voices and experiences through a dedicated blog. Nationally prominent outlets, including The Huffington Post and GreenBiz.com, are increasingly picking up student work.
- A comprehensive directory of people and organizations engaged with the work of the Center. This includes students, faculty, alumni, staff, advisors and business partners. Individual profiles highlight how people or organizations are involved with the Center, as well as means of getting in touch.
- Mobile-friendly navigation and full integration of the Center’s social media channels. Our growing presence on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter indicates the power of these tools for both communication and conversation.
Above all else, the new website aims to demonstrate the Center’s role as a connector—of organizations, people and ideas. These connections drive the continued success of our work. As we build and strengthen our network at the intersection of business and the environment, we hope that the website serves as a platform to invigorate community involvement.
Alumni and working partners, in particular, provide a crucial supply of real-world expertise and human capital to the next generation of sustainability leaders. They support the Center and our student experience by headlining events, partnering with Yale SOM and F&ES, mentoring students and opening career opportunities, among other activities.
