Executive Voices in Sustainability: William Plunkett

What brought you to Yale?

Yale resonated not through a single differentiator but in a collection of small ways. The quality of instruction, international opportunities, integrated curriculum, raw cases, partnerships across the broader University, and interdisciplinary backgrounds of students all attracted me to Yale. The recently completed Evans Hall was a definite bonus!

How have you impacted sustainable practices in your career?

Hopefully contributing to shifting the conversation away from always needing to build new. If the most sustainable building is the one that is never built, then the second most sustainable building is using one that is already built.

What challenges do you see for sustainability in your industry?

While buildings account for approximately 40% of all carbon emissions, most building occupants rely on “invisible” building systems to improve environmental efficiency; however, any long-term approach will require behavioral change as well, which is presently a secondary discussion. There is much hope that current externalities will be increasingly become internalities in the next versions of leading environmental building codes and practices.

Tell us one thing about yourself that might surprise your classmates.

Most people are surprised or startled the first time they hear my laugh!
