What brought you to Yale?

The dedicated focus on sustainability, the close-knit SOM community and the easy access to world class faculty.

How have you impacted sustainable practices in your career?

I worked in the water treatment industry for eight years, both in the developing markets across Asia and in the United States. A lot of my work in the oil and gas industry has been linked to improving existing production technologies and rolling out new technologies that treat water and improve reservoir efficiencies. These technologies play a critical role in meeting the environmental guidelines set by the EPA and other regulatory bodies. This work, together with working on other water treatment projects that touch lives of entire communities has been a very gratifying experience.

What challenges do you see for sustainability in your industry?

Since the early 2000’s, the traditional hydrocarbon industry has taken efforts to invest in alternate energy sources and commercialize other technologies. This has included investments in solar, wind, biofuels and geothermal technologies, together with improving the carbon footprint of existing oil and gas projects with technologies such as Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS). However, these businesses have also been the first ones to be divested every time the markets turn south. It is not just the foresight of diversifying the asset base to include alternate energy resources that’s important, but also the resolve to weather the down cycles in energy markets that will truly help unlock the potential for alternate resources. And this, in my humble opinion, has been a challenge for the industry.
